What happens if I cancel? + You can cancel at the end of any billing cycle. The rebuilt site, your content, and your domain are all yours to keep. What happens to my current website and host? + Nothing until you decide. Your current site stays up while you review the rebuild. If you switch, we assist with the move and help you close out your old services. How fast is "same day" really? + Simple changes like hours, prices, or photos are usually live within the hour. Bigger items like a new service page take a few hours and go live once you approve them. Do changes go live without me knowing? + No. You are told when your requested changes are live, and bigger changes go to a preview site you approve first. Nothing is published without your knowledge. What about my existing content? + Your current content is preserved during the rebuild. Anything you want changed gets changed as part of getting started. Can I write my own content? + Yes. You can send copy you have written and it gets published. Routine content also gets drafted in your voice when you would rather not write it. What if I need a custom design or one-off project? + Routine design and content updates are included in the monthly cost. Larger one-off projects get scoped separately. Do you work with my industry? + This is built for businesses where customers find you by searching online. Professional services, health and wellness, home services, real estate, and other local or B2B service businesses. Not sure if you fit? Here are the 25 things Site Star does to keep yours improving, all handled for you. July 20, 2026 ![25 Things Site Star Does While You Run Your Business](https://sitestar.io/images/25-things-site-star-does-feature-image.jpg) The best business websites are never finished. They keep pace with the business: new services go up, hours and prices stay current, the design gets refreshed, problems get fixed fast, and new content keeps coming. That ongoing attention is what keeps a site working, and it is the part that rarely fits in around everything else you are running. Site Star is all of that work, handled. Not another tool for you to operate, but the whole job done for you: the rebuild, the hosting, the updates, the monitoring, the search and content work. You say what you want, and it is taken care of, on your site and on your timeline. Here are the 25 things Site Star does, how it works, and how to tell if it fits your business. ## What is Site Star? Site Star turns your website into a smart website: rebuilt, kept current, and steadily getting better, all under one monthly price. Rather than juggling a freelancer, a host, a maintenance plan, and whoever you call when something breaks, you have one place keeping the whole site current, working, and improving. You say what you want, and it gets handled. ## The everyday changes Most of what a website needs is small and routine: a price, a photo, a new service, a staff change. These are the updates that pile up, and the ones Site Star makes quick. 1. **Routine updates go out the same day you request them.** New hours, prices, photos, a staff change, a service you added. No week-long wait, no quote first. 2. **You request changes by email or text.** No page builder to learn, no ticket system, no portal to log into. You ask, and it gets handled. 3. **You start with a smarter version of your site, free to see.** Same business and content, rebuilt to look sharper, load faster, and be easier to find. There is no upfront project fee. [See yours](https://sitestar.io/new-website) before you decide anything. 4. **One place, one bill, and your site is always yours.** Hosting, updates, monitoring, and search stop being separate companies with separate invoices. It is all handled together, without locking your site into a platform you cannot get it out of. 5. **You approve changes before they go live.** Anything significant shows up on a private preview of your site first, so you can look it over and give the okay or ask for tweaks. Nothing reaches your live site until you are happy with it. ## Catching problems before your customers do Websites need looking after, not just building. Small things go wrong over time, and too often you hear about them from a customer or notice weeks later. These checks run in the background so problems get found first. 1. **We watch for outages, broken pages, and errors.** The site is checked around the clock, so a problem gets spotted and dealt with before it costs you a customer. 2. **Your contact forms are checked so they keep working.** A form can stop delivering messages after something as small as a plugin update, and you would not know until the inquiries dried up. Ongoing checks catch it before that happens. 3. **Broken links get found and fixed.** A visitor who lands on a dead page usually leaves without a word. Those links get tracked down and repaired, and every change is checked before it goes live so new ones do not slip through. 4. **Your site is backed up and watched for security issues.** There is always a clean version to restore, and known problems get caught instead of sitting open. 5. **The site gets reviewed the way a first-time visitor sees it.** Dead buttons, leftover placeholder text, details that contradict each other, menus that confuse. 6. **The site gets tested the way customers actually use it.** Real tasks like finding a service or sending an inquiry are run start to finish, and anything that trips up comes back with a screenshot of where. The full list is on the [features page](https://sitestar.io/features). ## How does Site Star improve search visibility? Search visibility usually means hiring a separate SEO company, or settling for an all-in-one tool that treats it as an afterthought. Here it is part of the same service that looks after your site, and the work follows how people actually search for you. 1. **The work starts with how people already find you.** We look at the searches bringing people to the site, and the ones that should be, then focus there. 2. **Pages that appear in search but do not get clicked get attention.** When your page shows up in the results and people scroll past it, we look at why and make it more compelling. 3. **We track the searches you are winning and losing.** When a page starts to slip, it gets noticed and worked on instead of quietly costing you visibility. 4. **We find searches your competitors show up for and you do not.** Each gap points to a specific page or piece of content worth adding. ## Content your business actually publishes Keeping new content on the site is one of those jobs that always slides to next month. Site Star keeps it moving without it landing on you. 1. **We keep an eye on your competitors.** When it is worth knowing that one has published something new or changed its approach, that gets surfaced to you rather than left for you to stumble on later. 2. **We suggest topics worth publishing.** Ideas are weighed against your services, your existing pages, and your audience first, so what reaches you is worth your time and not a random list. 3. **Approved ideas become finished drafts in your voice.** A topic you sign off on comes back as a complete post that sounds like you, ready to review. 4. **Every article is checked before it publishes.** The writing, the claims, the structure, the links, and the fit with your brand. 5. **Every post is built to be found, not just written.** Each one is structured the way search engines and AI tools reward, with clear headings, an FAQ that answers what people actually search, and links to related pages, so it has a real chance to show up. 6. **Related pages get connected as the site grows.** Someone reading one page finds the next useful service or article instead of reaching a dead end. 7. **Stale content gets refreshed.** Outdated facts and pages losing traffic get updated instead of left to sink. ## The technical housekeeping 1. **The behind-the-scenes pieces that help search engines and AI tools read your site stay in order.** Sitemaps, structured data, social previews, and the rest are kept current automatically, so they never become your problem. 2. **Search engines get told when something important changes.** Updated pages are submitted after each change so they show up in results sooner. ## You always know what’s been done 1. **You see what has changed on your site.** A clear summary lays out what was done, what was checked, and anything that needs a decision from you, so the work is never happening out of sight. There is no dashboard to dig through. ## How does Site Star compare to the alternatives? | Option | The catch | | --------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | A freelancer | Affordable, but slow to respond, and the result often misses what you asked for | | An agency | Capable work, but small changes turn into projects and costly invoices | | A DIY website builder | Cheap to start, but the work stays on you, so the site rarely gets touched | | Separate services | A host, a maintenance plan, a marketer, and none of them responsible for the whole | Site Star pulls all of that into one service. You ask, the work gets done, and one bill covers it. ## Is Site Star right for your business? Site Star fits businesses that rely on their website and want it handled well without it becoming a job. You get a smarter version of your site, kept current and always improving, with the attention of a full web team behind it. Your site keeps working while you stay focused on the business. ## What Site Star costs Site Star is one price, $350 a month, with no setup fee and the rebuild included. That covers what usually arrives as a stack of separate costs: hosting, maintenance, updates, monitoring, and search work. Instead of paying several vendors, or paying by the hour every time something needs to change, you have all of it in one place for one predictable amount. Full details are on the [pricing page](https://sitestar.io/pricing). ## How switching to Site Star works Switching does not land on you. Site Star handles the move off your current setup, so you are not the one going back and forth with your old provider. 1. Enter your website address on the [get started page](https://sitestar.io/new-website). There is no login or payment to see it. 2. Review the rebuilt version of your own site. Your current site stays live and untouched while you decide. 3. When you are ready, we handle the switch. Your content moves over, the hosting is set up, and the new site goes live, with nothing technical left on your plate. If you ever decide to leave, you keep the site, the content, and the domain. ## Frequently asked questions ### How much does Site Star cost? Site Star costs $350 per month with no setup fee. The rebuild and migration of your existing site are included in the monthly plan. ### Is Site Star a website builder? No, Site Star is not a website builder. It is a service that rebuilds and hosts your site and makes the changes you ask for, so there is nothing for you to install or learn. ### Who does the work on my website? Site Star automates the routine website work, and when you need help, a real person answers, not a ticket queue. You approve important changes on a private preview before they go live. ### Can I leave Site Star and keep my site? Yes. You can leave at the end of any billing period, and you keep the site, the content, and the domain. ### Do I have to be technical to use Site Star? No, you do not have to be technical to use Site Star. If you can send an email or a text message, you can request any change to your site. ## The takeaway A website is not something you finish and forget. It needs steady attention to stay current, keep working, and get better over time, and that is the part Site Star takes off your hands. You send what you want, the rest is handled, and you always know what changed. The simplest way to see what that looks like is on your own site. Canonical: https://sitestar.io/blog/five-website-numbers-to-watch Published: 2026-04-21 Updated: 2026-08-06 [Blog ](https://sitestar.io/blog)/Website Management # The Five Website Numbers Owners Should Actually Watch The five website metrics worth watching as an owner: what each one tells you, where to find it, and what to do when it looks wrong. April 21, 2026 Analytics tools track dozens of numbers about a website, and professionals put many of them to work. An owner needs a shorter list. Five numbers answer the questions an owner actually has: whether people are finding the site, whether visitors are contacting you, which pages bring in business, and how often Google is putting you in front of searchers. A look once a month can be enough to catch a problem while it is still small. Here is each one, where to find it, and what to do when it looks wrong. ## Visits show whether you’re being found The first number is how many people visited your site last month. [Google Analytics](https://analytics.google.com) reports it on its opening screen as users, and everything else builds on it, because nobody can contact a business they never reached. The count says more once you see where visitors came from. Analytics groups arrivals into channels, and these are the names you will actually see: - **Organic search:** people who typed something into Google and clicked your site in the results. Clicks from Google’s AI answers count here too. - **Paid search:** clicks on ads you are running. If you pay for Google Ads, that traffic reports here, separate from the visits you earn. - **Direct:** people who typed your address or used a saved link. Mostly people who already know you. - **Referral:** visitors who arrived through a link on another site. Visits from AI assistants like ChatGPT usually land here as well. - **Organic social:** visitors from platforms like Facebook or Instagram. What a good mix looks like depends on the business. A firm fed by referrals and repeat customers reads differently than one that depends on new customers finding it through search, and neither is wrong. The useful comparison is against your own expectations: if most of your customers should be finding you through Google but organic search is only a small share of your visits, or a channel you rely on has been shrinking for months, this number is pointing at where the attention should go. ## Contacts from your site usually aren’t being counted Visits measure interest. The number that ties the site to revenue is contacts: calls made from the site, forms submitted, appointments booked. A website conversion is any moment a visitor stops browsing and takes one of those actions. This number rarely exists until it gets set up. Google Analytics can count form submissions and taps on your phone number, and it calls them key events, but only after they are configured. Your form tool and booking tool keep their own counts as well. If your analytics shows zero conversions, the likeliest explanation is that these events were never set up. Recording form submissions and phone-number taps as key events is a small configuration job, and once it is done the number is real. Once the number exists, read it against visits. A hundred visitors and one contact tells a different story than thirty visitors and six. Plenty of traffic with few contacts usually means the page is in the way: a phone number that is hard to find or will not tap, a form that asks too much, no obvious next step. Each of those is a specific change to one page, and making it raises the value of every visitor you already get. ## Which pages do the work, and which lose people? Analytics also records where visitors arrive and where they leave. In Google Analytics, the report called Landing page, under the Engagement section, shows which page each visit started on. For most service businesses it shows the homepage and one or two service pages carrying nearly all the traffic, which is normal. Watch for a page that attracts plenty of visitors and produces no calls or forms. Say your air conditioning repair page is your most visited page, but the phone rarely rings from it: people are arriving, looking, and going. That single page is where effort pays. Make it faster, make the service and the starting point clearer, and put the contact step where a reader is already looking. One underperforming page that gets fixed often does more for the month than anything else on this list, because the visitors were already there. ## How to check speed, stability, and mobile in one report A slow site is only one of the problems that can cost you visitors without anyone noticing, and a single free tool grades the whole set. [PageSpeed Insights](https://pagespeed.web.dev) takes your web address, no login needed, and scores how fast the site loads, whether the page shifts around while it loads, and how it performs on a phone versus a computer. A weak score is common: the [HTTP Archive’s 2025 report](https://almanac.httparchive.org/en/2025/performance) found only 48% of mobile sites pass all of Google’s main speed and stability checks. A weak score is also rarely fixed with a setting or a plugin, because performance comes from how the site is built and where it is hosted. When the score sinks, something in the build or the hosting has changed for the worse, and the score is usually the first place that shows. You can also test it yourself without any tool: load your own site on your phone over mobile data, and if you find yourself waiting, so does every visitor. ## Search impressions warn you before traffic drops [Google Search Console](https://search.google.com/search-console) is Google’s free tool for seeing your site the way Google sees it. Its performance report counts impressions: how many times your site appeared in search results, whether anyone clicked or not. When impressions fall, Google is showing your site to fewer people, and that usually happens weeks before it turns into fewer visits and fewer calls. Those weeks are the point: a falling impression count gives you time to fix the cause before the loss reaches the phone. The causes, from stale content to technical problems to a competitor moving up, have their own guide: [why your website dropped in Google](https://sitestar.io/blog/why-website-dropped-in-google). ## The numbers live in three free tools Google Analytics, Google Search Console, and PageSpeed Insights cover all five numbers, and none of them costs anything. The first two need a one-time connection to your site; the third only ever asks for your address. The honest catch is that connected is not the same as watched. The numbers only help when they get read, whether by you on a monthly visit or by a service reading them for you, and a site whose numbers go unread can underperform for months with no one aware. [Site Star](https://sitestar.io/features) connects to your site’s analytics and reads them continuously, then flags problems for you: a page that stopped producing, a sinking performance score, a drop in impressions, each with a recommendation for what to do. Want the numbers without the homework? Site Star watches your site's numbers, flags problems, and recommends the fix. See your site rebuilt smarter, free. [Get started](https://sitestar.io/new-website) ## Frequently asked questions ### What website metrics should a small business track? A small business should track five website metrics: monthly visits and the channels they come from, contacts made through the site, which pages attract and lose visitors, the performance score covering speed and mobile, and search impressions. Together they answer whether the site is being found, bringing in business, and holding up. ### What is a website conversion? A website conversion is any moment a visitor stops browsing and takes the action you want: calling the number on the site, sending the contact form, or booking an appointment. Google Analytics calls these key events, and they usually have to be set up before they are counted. ### How often should I check my website analytics? Checking your website analytics once a month can be enough for most small businesses. A monthly look shows real trends, while daily checking mostly shows normal fluctuation that means nothing. The goal is to catch a steady change early, not to watch the numbers move. ### Can I get website reports without logging into Google Analytics? Yes, you can get website reports without logging into Google Analytics by having them delivered instead. Site Star connects to a site’s analytics, reads them for you, and sends a plain-English weekly report, so the numbers arrive without a dashboard. Five numbers, each with a place to find it and a question it answers. Watch them and your website stops being a mystery: you know when it is working, and you know where to look the moment it is not. ### Ready to have your website handled? The business an AI names is the one that gets found, and becoming that business takes real work. June 24, 2026 Search used to work one way. Someone typed what they needed, your site appeared in the results, they clicked, and they landed on your page. That is changing. More often now, people get their answer without clicking anything, either from the AI summary Google places at the top of the results or from a chatbot they asked directly. The question for a business that gets found online is no longer only whether you rank. It is whether you are the answer. This walks through what is shifting, why it matters for a service business, and the work it takes to stay findable. ## What is changing about search? Two things are happening at once, and both pull customers away from clicking your site. The first is on Google itself. When you search now, Google often writes an answer at the top of the page, pulled together from across the web. Many people read that summary and stop there. They got what they needed, so they never scroll to the list of sites underneath. That has a measurable cost even for pages that still rank first. According to [Digital Content Next](https://digitalcontentnext.org/blog/2025/05/06/googles-ai-overviews-linked-to-lower-publisher-clicks/), a publisher trade association, the click-through rate for the top organic result on searches with an AI Overview fell from 7.3% in March 2024, before the rollout, to 2.6% in March 2025 after it. Google has expanded AI answers to more searches since then, so that same drop now reaches more of what people look for. Same position, a fraction of the clicks. The second shift is happening away from Google entirely. People are starting to ask a chatbot instead of a search engine: they type a question into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Perplexity and get a written answer instead of a page of results. The [Pew Research Center](https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/2026/06/17/americans-and-ai-2026-chatbots-smart-devices-and-views-on-impact/) found that 49% of U.S. adults now use AI chatbots, up from 33% two years earlier, and 44% have used ChatGPT specifically. When half the country is comfortable asking an AI a question, a real share of them are asking the kind your business would want to answer. ## AI reads your business and describes it to customers An answer engine is a tool that reads across the web and returns a written answer, sometimes with a few supporting links, instead of a page of results. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity work this way, and Google’s AI summary does the same job at the top of a normal search. The AI builds its answer from what it can read about your business: your website, your Google listing, directories, review sites, and anywhere else you are mentioned. From those sources it decides what is true and describes your business to the customer, sometimes without sending them to your site at all. That is the real change. Your business is no longer only competing for a spot on a list. An AI now reads it, summarizes it, and sometimes recommends it, working only from what it found online. ## Being the answer matters as much as ranking Ranking still counts. The pages an AI trusts and pulls from tend to be the ones that already rank well, so the two goals overlap more than they compete. The new goal sits alongside the old one: it is no longer enough to appear in the results, because you want to be the source the AI quotes and names. When a customer asks an AI for a recommendation, its description is often all they see before choosing who to contact. The business it can describe fully and accurately is the one that gets contacted. Search has been moving this way for a while. A page can hold its position and still bring in fewer visitors, because Google now prints the answer on the results page itself. That shift has its own post: [why your website dropped in Google](https://sitestar.io/blog/why-website-dropped-in-google). AI answers push it further. The work that makes your business easy for an AI to read and recommend is the same work that earns rankings. ## How to stay findable as search changes The direction of the work has not changed, but more is riding on it. The same things that earn rankings now also determine whether AI systems cite you, and how well they get done is what separates being named from being skipped. The fundamentals come first: - **Content that answers real questions:** pages that answer what customers actually ask, worded the way customers ask it. “Water heater replacement cost,” not “domestic hot water solutions.” Key facts near the top, headings that say what each section covers, so a person can skim it and an AI can quote it. - **Business details that match everywhere:** name, address, phone, hours, and services should agree across your site, your Google listing, and the directories that mention you. Conflicting details give a system deciding whether to name you a reason to pass. - **Reviews that keep coming:** reviews feed Google and the chatbots weighing who to recommend, and growing them is its own practice: [how to get more Google reviews](https://sitestar.io/blog/how-to-get-more-google-reviews) covers it. - **Helpful content, not just a services list:** an AI answering a question needs material that answers it. Guides, explainers, and articles about the problems customers bring you give it that material; a site that only lists services and hours gives it almost nothing to quote. Past the fundamentals sits the technical layer that decides whether AI systems can read you at all: - **Structured data:** labels in your site’s code that state what the business is, where it operates, and what it offers. Visitors never see them; the systems deciding whether to cite you rely on them. - **Clean structure:** headings in a sensible order, one page per main service, a sitemap kept current. The difference between a site an AI can quote and one it skims past is usually structural. - **Crawl access:** AI systems read your site with automated visitors, and a site that loads slowly, blocks them, or is full of broken links gets read less and cited less. - **Question-and-answer sections:** an AI assembles its answer from passages that already answer a question cleanly, so a page that poses and answers the real ones gives it exactly that. - **Recently updated pages:** systems weigh how fresh a page is, and a site whose pages show recent updates reads as a business still in operation. Doing this well is real work. It is SEO, content, and technical upkeep, done together, and it moves as the AI tools move. The businesses showing up in AI answers are mostly the ones doing that work on a consistent schedule rather than once. ## Nobody controls what the AI recommends Ads are beginning to appear in some AI tools, but the organic answer itself is not for sale, and no one can guarantee a place in it. What you can do is make your business the clearest, most consistent, most credible option available, which improves your chances without promising an outcome. Any service that guarantees you a spot in AI answers is promising something nobody controls. The work is also ongoing. Content goes stale, a new service needs a page, listings drift out of sync, and the AI tools change month to month. [Site Star](https://sitestar.io/features) runs the search side of it: regular search checks and fixes, content kept current and growing, and structured data and sitemaps maintained. Recommendations come to you when a change is worth making, and you keep ownership of the site, the content, and the domain. Want your business to stay the answer? AI answers change month to month, and a site left alone can drop out of them. Site Star keeps your content clear and your site readable to AI, so you stay easy to recommend. AI is changing how customers find businesses by answering searches directly instead of sending people to your site. Google’s AI summary and chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity now hand customers a written answer, so being the source an AI names and describes accurately matters as much as ranking. ### Do AI overviews reduce clicks to my website? Yes, AI overviews reduce clicks to your website. On searches where Google shows an AI summary, the top organic result’s click-through rate fell from 7.3% to 2.6% in the year after the rollout, so even a page ranking first can lose most of its clicks to the answer above it. ### How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT or Gemini? Nobody controls exactly what ChatGPT or Gemini recommends, so there is no guaranteed placement. You improve your odds by keeping your content clear and complete, your business details consistent everywhere online, your reviews healthy, and your site structured so AI systems can read it, which makes you an easy and credible answer to give. ### How do I keep my business easy to find as search keeps changing? You keep a business easy to find as search changes through steady upkeep: current content, consistent details across your site and listings, healthy reviews, and the structured data that lets AI systems read the site. Site Star handles that upkeep continuously, keeping the site current and findable while you run the business. The way customers reach you is changing, but the response is not complicated. Stay clear, stay consistent, and keep the details right, and you stay findable whether the answer comes from a search result or an AI. ### Want a site that works at getting found? How it works, and how to compete. August 3, 2026 ![How Fake Local Listings Steal Your Customers](https://sitestar.io/images/how-fake-local-listings-steal-your-customers-feature-image.jpg) The top results for a service in your area may not be a reliable list of the businesses that do the work. Some are fabricated: business listings and websites that lead generation companies create to look like real local companies. They carry an address near the searcher and reviews no customer wrote, and they can outrank the genuine businesses nearby. Call one and the number does not reach the business shown. It connects to a call center that sells the call to whichever contractor pays most and sends whoever is available, at a marked-up price. This is an organized industry that runs wherever local services are searched for. It clusters in the categories customers reach for under pressure, locksmiths, garage door repair, plumbers, HVAC, towing, and water damage, but it spans far more of the local service world, including auto repair, law and medical offices, and accountants. Anywhere a single lead can be resold, the fakes appear. Here is how it works, and how a real business competes. ## Why fake businesses outrank real ones in local search A lead generation company can register hundreds or thousands of domains at once, each built around one city and one service. The names follow a pattern once you notice it, something like 24HourPlumber\[City\].com or Emergency\[Trade\]Repair\[City\].com, one built for every service and city worth a lead. Each domain gets a matching website and Google listing, with an address near the searcher and reviews no real customer wrote, so it looks like an established company. The volume is the trick: a real business is one listing, and it can end up surrounded by dozens of fabricated versions of the same search. Behind the listing is a call center, not a company. The Google Business Profile or website is only the front. When the phone rings, the call goes to an operation that resells it to whichever contractor pays most. The scale is documented. One operation, Premium Home Service, built thousands of fabricated listings for home repair businesses and routed the calls to overseas call centers. It employed no technicians of its own. The Department of Justice and the Illinois Attorney General [sued the company in May 2026](https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2026/05/ftc-illinois-take-action-stop-deceptive-conduct-company-created-thousands-business-listings-fake). Google is fighting the same pattern. In March 2025 it [sued a network](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/google-maps-fake-listings-lawsuit-scams/) behind more than 10,000 fabricated Maps listings, and said it had removed or blocked about 12 million fake business profiles the year before. This is different from a directory or marketplace that says plainly what it is: a service that connects customers with many businesses, not a business itself. A customer knows they are dealing with a middleman. A fabricated listing does the opposite and presents itself as a single real company that does not exist. ## What fake listings cost your business The damage lands in three places. **Fewer customers find you:** the fake listings flood the search results, so real businesses appear lower, where fewer people look. One operation putting up dozens of versions for each nearby city can be enough to push a legitimate business off the first page. **Every lead costs more:** these operations run Google Ads too, on national budgets, because they resell each call at a profit. Bidding on the same searches, you are up against a company that can pay more for a click than the click is worth to you, which raises the price of every paid lead. **Customers trust search less:** once people know these fakes exist, they cannot tell the real listings from the fabricated ones, so they treat every result with suspicion, including yours. Legitimate businesses end up having to prove they are real before a customer will call. Tired of fakes taking your calls? Fabricated competitors come and go. Site Star keeps your real site current and credible, so yours is the business that lasts. [Get started](https://sitestar.io/new-website) ## Why a fake business isn’t accountable to anyone Here is the difference that matters to a customer. A real business is licensed, insured, and answerable to someone: a state board, a licensing authority, an address you can visit. In Texas, for one example, a plumber is licensed by the [State Board of Plumbing Examiners](https://tsbpe.texas.gov/consumer-information/), which takes complaints and can act on them. A fabricated listing answers to none of that. It sells marketing, not the actual work, and the person who buys the lead may be unlicensed and uninsured. So when a job goes wrong, a customer who hired a real business has somewhere to turn, and a customer who called a fake usually has nowhere. That gap is the real cost, and it is the strongest thing a legitimate business has going for it. ## Why you can’t wait for regulators Regulators and state attorneys general have started bringing cases. But enforcement takes years, a single case does not clear the search results, and none of it changes what a customer sees when they search tomorrow. You can report a fabricated listing to Google and a deceptive operator to the FTC, and it is worth doing, but reporting is slow enough that it cannot be your defense. Waiting for the rules to catch up is not a plan. ## How to compete with fake local businesses The hard truth is that a good fake is hard to spot. It has a nearby address, a pile of reviews, and a site that looks legitimate, the same surface signals a real business shows. So competing is not about looking real for a moment. It is about being verifiably real and giving a customer easy ways to confirm it. - **Claim and verify your Google Business Profile.** Google can verify a real location, and it cannot verify one that does not exist. A verified profile with an accurate address, real hours, real photos, and replies to reviews is something a fabricated listing struggles to match, and it is free. - **Prove the business is real.** Your license number, photos of your actual team and work, a real address and service area, and specifics about the jobs you do. A fabricated listing is generic because it has to be, so concrete detail is proof it cannot copy. - **Build genuine reviews over time.** Real, recent reviews accumulate in a way bought ones do not, and fake reviews can be reported and removed. Growing them is its own practice, covered in [how to get more Google reviews](https://sitestar.io/blog/how-to-get-more-google-reviews). - **Keep a real, current website.** Search engines increasingly demote thin, duplicated sites, so a genuine site with real content about your work and your area holds up better than a fabricated one over time. The catch is that none of it is finished once. Your reviews, your content, and your listing all have to stay current as the business changes, and that ongoing work is where most owners run out of time. [Site Star](https://sitestar.io/features) does it for you. It rebuilds your site to look and work like the established business you are. It keeps every page specific to the services you offer and the areas you cover. And it does the ongoing search work, so your real business stays visible while the fabricated ones cycle through new listings and vanish. Search should connect customers with the real businesses near them. For now, fabricated competitors crowd the results. You cannot remove them, but you can be the business that is clearly, verifiably real, and that is what keeps the calls coming to you. ## Frequently asked questions ### What are fake local business listings? Fake local business listings are online profiles and websites created to look like real local companies that do not exist. They use a nearby address and fabricated reviews to rank in search, then route callers to a call center that resells the call, often at a markup. ### Why are fake companies outranking my real business in local search? Fake companies outrank real ones by creating large numbers of listings and sites targeting each city and service, which flood the results. Built for search engines rather than customers, they can crowd out a single legitimate business that follows the law. ### How do I compete with lead generation companies as a local business? You compete by being verifiably real: a verified Google Business Profile, real reviews and photos, your license on display, and a current website with genuine content about your work. Those signals accumulate over time in ways a fabricated listing cannot match. ### How do I report a fake business listing? You report a fake business listing to Google through its Business Profile redressal process, and you can report deceptive operators to the FTC. Because enforcement is slow, reporting helps but should not be your only defense against them. ### Want a site that works at getting found? Your rebuilt site comes with proactive search built in. January 15, 2026 ![How to Get More Google Reviews](https://sitestar.io/images/how-to-get-more-google-reviews-feature-image.jpg) When someone needs a plumber, a dentist, or an accountant, the search comes first and the reviews decide who gets the call. Two businesses sit side by side on the map. One has a dozen reviews from three years ago. The other has eighty, with new ones every month. Plenty of people never look past that comparison. Getting more reviews does not take software or a script. It takes asking at the right moment, making it easy to say yes, and keeping the habit going. This covers when to ask, how to make it one tap, how to handle what comes back, and the rules worth knowing. ## What Google reviews actually do Reviews work on two fronts at once. They help you get found, because steady, recent review activity is one of the signals Google weighs when it decides which local businesses to show. And they help you get chosen, because people read them the way they read a recommendation from a neighbor. Recency carries real weight. Reviews that all date back a few years read like a business that stopped. A few new ones every month read like a business people keep hiring. The total matters less than the pace. ## When is the right time to ask? Ask while the work is still fresh. The job is finished, the problem is solved, the customer just said thank you. That is the moment a review request feels natural, because saying yes is easy when the good result is right in front of them. Wait a few weeks and the same request feels like asking for a favor. The words can stay plain. In person or by text, something like: “A quick Google review helps us a lot. I’ll text you the link.” It does not need to be fancier than that. ## How to make leaving a review one tap The biggest reason happy customers never leave a review is the number of steps. They meant to, then they had to search for your business, find the right listing, and hunt for the review button, and the moment passed. Google gives every business a direct review link. To find it: - Sign in to your Google Business Profile. - Look for “Ask for reviews.” - Copy the short link it shows you. Share that link and the whole process becomes one tap: open, pick a star rating, type a sentence, done. Send it by text rather than email where you can, because texts get read. A short thank you text with the link, an hour or two after the job, is all it takes. ## Make asking part of the routine One round of asking produces one bump, and then it stops. A steady review page comes from making the ask part of every job, attached to something that already happens: the final invoice, the wrap-up text, the follow-up call. Build it in once and the reviews keep coming on their own. A few real ones each month, month after month, looks right to customers and to Google, because it is right. Twenty in one week followed by a year of silence reads as staged, even when it is not. ## Reply to every review, good and bad Replies are not really for the person who wrote the review. They are for the next customer, who reads them to see what kind of business answers. A short, specific thank you on a good review takes thirty seconds and shows someone is paying attention. Bad reviews deserve a reply even more. Stay calm, keep it factual, and offer to make it right. Future customers are rarely scared off by one unhappy voice. Silence, or an owner arguing in public, is what turns them away. Handled that way, a bad review often ends up doing more good than harm. ## The rules on paid and incentivized reviews A genuine Google review is a short, unpaid note from a real customer about work you actually did for them. Anything that changes that, a payment, a swapped review, a discount in exchange for stars, sits outside Google’s review policy, and Google removes reviews that fit those patterns. The legal side is worth knowing too. In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission’s Consumer Review Rule covers fake reviews and rewards tied to positive ones, with penalties of up to [$53,088 per violation](https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2025/12/ftc-warns-10-companies-about-possible-violations-agencys-new-consumer-review-rule). In December 2025 the FTC began reaching out to companies with warning letters about exactly this. Those are the facts to weigh before deciding how you ask. Reviews do half the job: they get you found and get you picked. The other half happens right after, because most people who read your reviews click through to the website before they call. [Site Star](https://sitestar.io/features) handles that half, the site rebuilt, kept current, and kept found in search, the same ongoing attention that keeps a site from [slipping in Google](https://sitestar.io/blog/why-website-dropped-in-google). One flat rate, and both halves are covered. Reviews win the click. Your website wins the call. Site Star keeps your website current, fast, and found, so the customers your reviews win land on a business worth calling. You get more Google reviews by asking right after a good result, while the customer is still glad they hired you, and by sending a direct review link by text so leaving one takes a single tap. Making the ask part of your normal close-out routine keeps reviews arriving steadily instead of in one burst. ### Can I offer a discount for a Google review? Offering a discount, gift, or anything of value for a Google review is prohibited by Google’s review policy, and under the FTC’s Consumer Review Rule it can bring penalties of up to $53,088 per violation in the United States. Google also removes reviews that fit incentivized patterns, which can cost more than the reviews were worth. ### Should I respond to negative Google reviews? Yes, you should respond to negative Google reviews, calmly and with the facts, offering to make things right. The reply is really for the future customers reading later, and how you answer reassures them more than silence ever will. ### Do Google reviews help local search ranking? Yes, Google reviews help local search ranking. Steady, recent, genuine reviews are one of the signals Google weighs when deciding which local businesses to show, and they influence the people reading them just as much. None of this takes a budget. Ask at the right moment, make it one tap, reply to what comes back, and let the pace stay natural. The reviews build month after month, and they keep working long after any ad stops running. ### Want a site that works at getting found? Your rebuilt site comes with proactive search built in. Introducing Site Star, your whole website rebuilt smarter, handled, and always improving. December 2, 2025 Every website starts aging the day it goes live. Built once, it looks right for a while, and then it sits still while the business keeps moving. New services, a changed team, work worth showing that never makes it onto the page. The website stays frozen at launch, and the gap between it and the real business only widens. For a business that lives on getting found online, a website really shouldn’t sit still like that. It is the first thing a customer sees, and often the reason they call. When the site falls behind, the business it is meant to bring in falls behind with it. Site Star exists to change that. It takes on the whole website, from the rebuild and hosting to the everyday updates and the ongoing work of keeping the site found and improving, all in one place for one monthly price. The site keeps pace with the business instead of falling behind it. ## The quiet cost of a website that sits still A neglected website rarely breaks in a way you notice right away. It slips instead. A service you no longer offer stays up. The team page still lists someone who moved on. A contact form stops sending, with no alert when it does. Bit by bit, the site says less and less about who the business actually is now. These problems tend to hide until a customer runs into one. Someone mentions an old price they saw. A lead that should have come in never does, and the reason never surfaces. By the time any of it reaches you, the site has been costing you quietly for a long time, because keeping watch over it was never anyone’s job. ## What makes a smart website different? Site Star turns your website into a smart website, one that keeps up with the business rather than falling behind it. As the business changes, the site changes with it. When something needs updating, you ask, and Site Star handles it, with no dashboard to open and no quote to wait on. The work of keeping the site accurate, fast, and findable runs continuously in the background, so the version a customer lands on is a current one. A smart website is one that keeps getting better after it launches: rebuilt at the start, then kept up to date, watched for problems, and improved over time, all handled for you. It is, simply, a website that gets better instead of older. ## Everything the site needs, handled in one place Site Star gives you the outcome of a full web team without hiring, briefing, or chasing one. The rebuild and hosting, the everyday updates, the monitoring that catches problems early, the search work that keeps you found, and the content that keeps the site growing are all handled in one place. Canonical: https://sitestar.io/blog/what-visitors-look-for-on-your-website Published: 2026-02-10 Updated: 2026-08-05 [Blog ](https://sitestar.io/blog)/Design & Rebuilds # What Visitors Look for When They Land on Your Website What visitors size up in their first seconds on your site, why it decides whether they reach out, and how to make sure yours holds up. February 10, 2026 Every visitor arrives with the same question: is this the right business to call? They found you through a search, a referral, or your reviews, and the website is where they check. The checking goes fast: [research published by Google](https://research.google/blog/users-love-simple-and-familiar-designs-why-websites-need-to-make-a-great-first-impression/) puts a visitor’s first gut feeling at under 50 milliseconds, quicker than a blink, and everything they see after that either confirms it or undoes it. Winning that first look does not necessarily take a beautiful site. Visitors look for the same handful of things everywhere, mostly without knowing it. Here is what they look for, and how to make sure your site holds up. ## Visitors decide before they read The first impression forms before a single sentence gets read, and three things do most of the deciding. The age of the design registers first. Visitors date a website the way they date a kitchen, in one glance, from the style of the photos, the density of the text, and the shape of the layout. A design from several years back quietly sets the expectation that the information on it is several years old too, whether or not that is fair. The same Google research found that visitors favor designs that look simple and familiar; an unusual layout reads as worse even when it is cleaner. Signs of care come next. A page that assembles cleanly, with nothing missing, nothing overlapping, and nothing shifting around while it loads, reads as a business with its details handled. An image that never arrives or a menu that opens over the text suggests the opposite, and visitors absorb that without consciously noticing it. Speed runs underneath both. Nobody grades load time on its own, but a visitor kept waiting starts impatient, and impatience makes every judgment after it harsher. With the search results one tap away, a slow first screen shortens the patience everything else on your site gets. Website credibility is whether a first-time visitor believes your business is legitimate, current, and worth contacting, and by the end of that first look, these three signals have done most of the deciding. ## Can they tell what you do? Within a second or two, a visitor needs to know they are in the right place. That does not mean the page has to announce itself in any particular words. The whole first screen carries the message together: the headline, the photos, the menu, the button they are being offered. A remodeler whose first screen shows finished kitchens, a menu with three project types, and a button to request an estimate has answered the question without a sentence of explanation. Watch out for the version that feels right but fails. A hero that leads with “Quality You Can Trust Since 1998” reads as credible and says nothing, because the visitor still cannot tell what the business does or whether it fits their problem. What fails here is a first screen that could belong to any business, leaving the visitor to do the work your site should do. ## Does it answer the questions they came with? Past the first look, visitors go looking for their specific answer. Nobody searches for a website; they search for a service, a repair, a project. The visitor who typed “water heater replacement” wants to see water heaters on your site, and a broad services list that leaves them guessing whether you handle their job sends them to a competitor who says so plainly. The fix is structural more than verbal. Give each main service its own page or section, name the work the way customers name it, and keep the path from the homepage to any service short. When the thing someone came for has its own place on your site, the visitor gets their answer, and so do the search engines deciding whether to send you the next one. ## They look for signs of an established business Before reaching out, visitors check that there is a working operation behind the site. A phone number and a physical address, or a plainly stated service area, anchor the business somewhere. Hours tell them when someone answers. In trades where customers expect it, a line about being licensed and insured belongs where it can be seen. A site that offers only a contact form, with no number and no address, reads thinner than one that shows where it works and how to reach it. Consistency matters here too. Many visitors land on the site straight from your Google listing, and the details should agree: same name, same number, same hours. A mismatch is small, but it leaves them wondering which one is right, and search engines notice the same disagreements. ## Proof from people you’ve already served A stranger trusts other customers before they trust you. Visible reviews, a rating, or a few words from someone you have worked for tell the visitor that people have already taken the risk and been glad. Photos of finished work and the people behind the business add the kind of evidence a visitor can see for themselves. Put genuine proof where a first-time visitor will find it without hunting. If the reviews themselves are thin, that is a fixable problem, and [how to get more Google reviews](https://sitestar.io/blog/how-to-get-more-google-reviews) covers it step by step. Steady, real reviews help twice: they persuade the people reading them, and they support how you show up in local search. ## Most visits now happen on a phone For many businesses, most visits now happen on a phone, and a phone visitor is trying to do specific things: read without zooming, tap the number to call, find directions, send a short message. Each one is a place the site can fail without anyone reporting it. The visitor just leaves. The details worth getting right add up to whether acting is easy. The phone number should dial when tapped, not sit as plain text to memorize. A contact form should ask for a few things, not ten, because every extra field costs patience on a small screen. Buttons need space around them, text needs to be readable at arm’s length, and the menu has to open and close without a fight. Test all of it on your own phone over mobile data, then borrow someone else’s, because the site that behaves on your device can misbehave on theirs. ## How to check your own site this week Go through your site the way a stranger would, in the same order: 1. Load the site on your phone using mobile data and count the seconds until something readable appears. 2. Look only at the first screen. Could a stranger tell what you do, and would anything there make them feel they are in the right place? 3. Search for one of your specific services the way a customer would, then follow the path from your homepage to it. Count the steps. 4. Tap the phone number. Try the form. Check that your name, number, and hours match your Google listing. 5. Step back and ask how old the site feels: the photos, the layout, anything announcing something long past. A good first impression is not a one-time fix. Sites age the way businesses change: a service gets added, photos fall out of date, a design that looked current slowly stops. Visitors landing on a website look for a page that loads quickly and looks current, a first screen that makes clear what the business does, a clear answer on whether the business handles their specific job, signs of an established business such as a phone number, address, and hours, visible proof from other customers, and a site that works easily on a phone. Together those signals decide whether they reach out or go back to the search results. ### How fast do visitors judge a website? Visitors judge a website almost instantly: research published by Google puts the first gut feeling at under 50 milliseconds, faster than a blink. That impression forms before they read much, built from how quickly the page appears and how current it looks, so speed and design shape the first judgment before any writing gets a chance. ### How do I make my website look more trustworthy? You make a website look more trustworthy by keeping it fast and current, making the first screen show plainly what you do, answering the practical questions visitors arrive with, and putting real reviews and real photos where people see them without hunting. Keeping those fresh matters as much as setting them up once. ### How do I keep my website up to date over time? You keep a website up to date with ongoing attention, because speed, content, photos, and design all drift as the business changes. You can handle that yourself with a regular review, or use a service built for it: Site Star rebuilds your site and then keeps it current, working, and found for one flat monthly rate, with changes handled when you ask. The visitor deciding whether to call has only your site to go on. Keep it fast, current, and convincing, and more of the people who land end up reaching out. ### See your site rebuilt free. Canonical: https://sitestar.io/blog/where-small-businesses-waste-money-on-marketing Published: 2026-03-17 Updated: 2026-08-05 [Blog ](https://sitestar.io/blog)/Marketing & Growth # Where Small Businesses Waste Money on Marketing Where small business marketing money actually goes to waste: the wrong channels, budgets spread too thin, disconnected pieces, and how to fix each one. March 17, 2026 Most wasted marketing money does not fail loudly. The ads run, the posts go up, the invoices clear, and the results look about the same as before. Nothing seems broken. The money just is not doing what it was supposed to do. Marketing does more than one job. Some of it builds your name, some keeps you in front of people, and for most small businesses the biggest share is meant to bring in business. That share is where waste concentrates, and where it is easiest to fix. Wasted marketing spend is money that never had a real chance to do its job: it backed a channel your buyers do not use, got split too thin to gain traction, or paid for work nobody connected together. The stakes are real. When the Federal Reserve surveyed small employers for its [2026 report on employer firms](https://www.fedsmallbusiness.org/reports/survey/2026/2026-report-on-employer-firms), reaching customers and growing sales was the most common challenge owners named, ahead of hiring and keeping staff. A large share of marketing money is aimed at exactly that problem, so it is worth knowing where it slips. ## Advertising where your customers aren’t looking Every channel sells itself. The platforms pitch you constantly, a peer swears by what worked for them, and there is always something new that is supposed to change everything. None of it answers the question that matters: when someone needs what you sell, where do they look? A plumber can pour real money into a polished social presence while nearly every job in town starts with a search for “plumber near me.” A dental practice can keep paying for a coupon mailer while new patients search, compare a few websites, and book from the one that looks current. In both cases the effort is real and the work might even be good. The customers are just looking somewhere else, and for most service businesses, where they look is a search and then a website. The answer is already inside your business. Ask every new customer how they found you, and track it the same way you track the work itself. Within a month or two the pattern is unmistakable: search, referrals, the map listing, repeat work. That pattern, not a platform’s pitch, is where the budget belongs. **The takeaway:** learn where your customers actually go when they need what you do, and put your money there before anywhere else. ## A little money in a lot of places rarely adds up Budgets spread gradually. A little on search ads one month, a boosted post the next, a sponsorship someone asked about, an email blast now and then. Each one had a reason at the time. Together they leave every channel short. When the budget is spread that thin, most of it never gets a fair chance. Each piece can be too small to gain traction, and six months of small spends can add up to real money with little to show. Worse, you cannot tell what failed. Maybe the search ads never had enough behind them. Maybe the channel was wrong from the start. With everything underfunded, you never find out. Concentration usually beats coverage. Pick the one or two channels most likely to reach your buyers, fund them properly, and judge them on inquiries and jobs, not impressions. When something clearly works, widen from there. **The takeaway:** a marketing budget does more concentrated in one or two channels than scattered across six. ## Marketing pieces that were never connected Look at how the marketing pieces are usually arranged. The company that built the website finished the project and moved on. Hosting sits with a provider you hear from at renewal. Search help came from a vendor at some point, and new content goes up when someone has time. Each piece sits with someone different, and the whole sits with no one. That arrangement shows up in small ways. A service you no longer offer still has a page. A search result leads with something outdated. The site quietly stops sounding like the business. None of it is dramatic, and all of it discounts every dollar you spend sending people there. Another vendor does not fix this. What fixes it is the connected work, the site, its updates, its [search standing](https://sitestar.io/blog/why-website-dropped-in-google), its content, handled together, with responsibility for the whole instead of a corner. **The takeaway:** your website, hosting, search, and content pay off when they are handled together, not maintained separately by different hands. ## Forgetting the customers you already have In many service businesses, the contact ends when the invoice is paid. The number stays in the phone, the email sits on the invoice, and the customer never gets another message. Not a thank-you, not a reminder when the next service is due. It is not neglect. The customer list and the marketing were just never wired together. That disconnect is expensive. A past customer knows your work and trusts you. Their next job takes a reminder. A stranger’s first job takes a campaign. A note when you add a service, a seasonal reminder when it is time for the kind of work you do, a thank-you that keeps you in mind. Work that comes back this way costs a fraction of what any ad does, and all it takes is a real list and a reason to reach out a few times a year. **The takeaway:** past customers are the least expensive work you will ever win, so keep a list and stay in touch. ## How to get more from what you already spend None of these fixes needs a bigger budget or a new hire, and you do not have to take them all on at once. Start by tracking how new customers find you, because everything else follows from that answer. Then give your best channel enough funding to prove itself, and reach out to a few past customers. These are small steps, but they compound, and they cost less than another month on the current pattern. And wherever someone first hears about you, they usually end up in the same place before they call: your website. It is where a search turns into a visit, where a referral goes to look you up, and where the content that gets you found actually lives. That is the piece [Site Star](https://sitestar.io/product) takes on whole. The rebuild, the hosting, the updates, the content, and the search work, handled together for [one flat rate of $350 a month](https://sitestar.io/pricing). Small businesses waste the most marketing money in a few recurring ways: funding channels their customers do not actually use, spreading a small budget too thin for anything to gain traction, running disconnected efforts with nobody responsible for the whole, and rarely staying in touch with past customers. ### How do I figure out which marketing channel is right for my business? The right marketing channel for your business is the one your customers already use when they need what you do. Track how each new customer found you, whether through search, referrals, maps, or repeat business, and put your money behind the sources that keep coming up. ### Is it better to spread a marketing budget across several channels? Usually not. Spreading a small marketing budget across several channels can leave each piece too underfunded to perform, and you cannot tell whether a channel failed or simply never had enough behind it. One or two channels funded properly tend to return more and teach you more. ### Should I market to past customers or focus on new ones? Both have a place, but staying in touch with past customers is usually the highest-return marketing a small business can do. They already know and trust your work, so a simple note or seasonal reminder can bring back jobs at a fraction of the cost of winning a stranger. None of this asks for a bigger budget. Put the money where your customers actually look, give it enough to work, keep the pieces connected, and stay in touch with the people who already chose you. The same spend starts bringing back more. ### Want more from your marketing budget? The website is where your marketing lands. See yours rebuilt free, with no login or payment to get started. Canonical: https://sitestar.io/blog/why-website-dropped-in-google Published: 2026-07-29 Updated: 2026-08-06 [Blog ](https://sitestar.io/blog)/Search Visibility # Why Your Website Dropped in Google (and How to Get It Back) Website rankings rarely fall for no reason. Here's why your site dropped in Google, how to find the cause, and what it takes to get them back. July 29, 2026 Search rankings are not fixed. A page can sit at the top for a year, then slide down over a few weeks while nothing on your end seems to have changed. It feels random, but it almost never is. A drop points to a specific cause, and most of the common ones can be found and dealt with. This walks through why a business website loses rankings, how to figure out which reason applies to you, and what it takes to climb back. ## Did your rankings actually drop, or does it just look that way? Before assuming the worst, confirm there is a real drop. What you see when you search your own business is not what everyone sees. Google personalizes results based on your location and history, so your site can look lower to you than it does to a stranger across town. Check it properly first: - Do a quick check in a private or incognito window, signed out, so your own history is not shaping what you see. Treat this as an occasional spot check, not a daily habit, and rely on Search Console for the real picture. - Look at Google Search Console, the free tool that shows how your site actually performs in search. It tells you which terms you rank for and whether clicks and impressions really fell. - Compare a few weeks, not a few days. Normal ranking wobble is not the same as a steady decline. If the numbers confirm a real slide, the next step is finding the cause. ## What makes a website lose rankings A drop almost always has a concrete cause, and once you know what to look for, none of them are mysterious. Most trace back to one of these: - **A competitor got better:** Someone else improved their pages, published more, or earned more links and moved ahead of you. Your site did not get worse; the bar moved. - **Your content went stale:** Pages that have not been touched in years lose ground to fresher, more complete answers. Google favors content that is kept current. - **Something broke:** A slow site, pages that fail to load, a redesign that dropped old URLs, or broken links can all pull rankings down quietly. - **You lost links or listings:** When other sites stop linking to you, or your business listings fall out of date, the signals that supported your ranking weaken. - **Google changed its rules:** Google updates how it ranks pages many times a year, and a larger update can reshuffle results across an entire industry at once. - **Search itself shifted:** More and more, people get their answer on the results page and never click, which shows up as lost traffic even when your position held. Often it is more than one of these at the same time. The next step is working out which. ## How to find the cause You do not need to guess. Work through it in order, from the easiest thing to rule out to the hardest, and the pattern usually becomes clear: 1. **Check the timing:** In Search Console, find the week the decline started, then line it up against anything you changed, a redesign, a new plugin, a content cleanup, or against a known Google update. 2. **Check the page, not just the site:** Drops are often specific. Find which pages and search terms lost the most, and you narrow things down fast. 3. **Check the basics:** Load the affected pages on your phone. Are they slow, broken, or redirecting oddly? Technical problems are common and fixable. 4. **Check the competition:** Search the terms you lost and look at who sits above you now. Often you can see exactly what they did that you did not. ## Search is changing, not just your position Even a page that held its ranking can bring in less traffic than it used to, because Google now answers many searches on the results page with an AI summary. People read the answer and move on without visiting any site. The scale is real. A [2025 Pew Research Center study](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2025/07/22/google-users-are-less-likely-to-click-on-links-when-an-ai-summary-appears-in-the-results/) of nearly 69,000 real searches found that when an AI summary appeared, people clicked a regular search result only 8% of the time, compared with 15% when there was no summary. They were also more likely to end the search entirely, 26% of the time versus 16%. Being found today means more than holding a position. It means having content clear and complete enough to be the answer people trust, whether they click through or not. ## How to get your rankings back Recovery is steady work, not a single fix, and honest guidance never promises a date. A few things reliably help: - **Refresh the pages that slipped:** Update the facts, fill the gaps, and make the page a more complete answer than whoever passed you. - **Fix the technical problems:** Speed, mobile display, broken links, and lost URLs are worth handling first, because they are concrete and within your control. - **Keep publishing:** A site that keeps adding useful, current content signals that the business is active, and it gives you more ways to be found. - **Keep your listings and links healthy:** Make sure the sites and directories that point to you still do, and that your business details are consistent everywhere. None of this pays off overnight. Rankings tend to recover gradually as the improvements add up, which is why staying at it matters more than any single change. ## Be careful with cheap SEO shortcuts When rankings fall, plenty of services will promise to put them back fast. Be wary of the ones selling shortcuts. Spinning up a near-identical page for every city and service, cramming location names into the footer, or buying bundles of low-quality backlinks can look like real work, and might even move things for a week. Google is built to catch those patterns, and the same tricks that give a quick bump often drag a site down further. Real recovery is slower and less flashy, but it holds. ## Can you fix this on your own? Some of it, yes. Updating a stale page or correcting your business hours is well within reach. The harder part is that rankings are not a one-time repair. Holding them takes steady attention across a lot of moving pieces: watching your search data, tracking where you rank, auditing the site for technical problems, refreshing content, keeping links and listings healthy, and adapting as search changes. That is a standing job, using more than one tool, and it is exactly the kind of work that slips when you are busy running a business. That ongoing work is part of what [Site Star](https://sitestar.io/features) does. The search side is handled continuously rather than in a panic after a drop, and it works alongside the [rebuild and hosting](https://sitestar.io/product) so the technical foundation stays sound. Search visibility stops being something you only notice when it slips. Want to stop worrying about your rankings? Site Star handles the search work on an ongoing basis, so a slip gets caught early instead of months later. A website usually drops in Google rankings because a competitor improved, your content went stale, something on the site broke, you lost links or listings, or Google changed how it ranks pages. The decline is rarely random, and the cause can almost always be traced in Google Search Console. ### How long does it take to recover lost rankings? Recovering lost rankings usually takes weeks to a few months, not days. Rankings tend to return gradually as content and technical improvements add up, so anyone promising a fixed recovery date is guessing. ### Can I get my rankings back myself? You can handle some of it yourself, such as refreshing stale pages and fixing obvious errors. Holding rankings over time is harder, because it takes ongoing content and technical upkeep, from site speed and broken pages to structure and search data, not a single fix. ### Do AI overviews affect my website traffic? Yes, AI overviews affect website traffic. When Google answers a search with an AI summary, many people read it and never click through, so your traffic can fall even when your ranking position stays the same. Losing rankings is a signal, not a verdict. You can usually trace the cause, fix it, and with steady upkeep, hold your place over time. ### Want a site that works at getting found? We do not sell or share your mobile phone number or text-messaging opt-in information with third parties. ## Customer website data When we operate a customer’s website, we may handle information submitted by that website’s visitors, such as contact-form submissions or analytics data. We process that information on the customer’s behalf, as a service provider acting under the customer’s direction, and use it only as reasonably necessary to operate, maintain, support, secure, or improve that customer’s website. Customers remain responsible for their own website content, privacy notices, disclosures, and collection and use of visitor information. This Privacy Policy applies to Site Star and does not serve as the privacy policy for any customer website. ## How we share information We do not sell personal information or share it with third parties for their own direct marketing. We may share information with service providers that help us operate and promote our business and provide our services. These may include hosting providers, payment processors, analytics providers, advertising platforms, communications platforms, contractors, security providers, and website tools. Advertising and analytics providers may collect information through cookies, pixels, or similar technologies to help us understand how people find and use our website and to measure the effectiveness of our advertisements. You can opt out of this ad-related sharing by emailing us at [hello@sitestar.io](mailto:hello@sitestar.io), and we honor Global Privacy Control (GPC) browser signals as a valid opt-out. We may also disclose information when required by law or when reasonably necessary to protect our rights, customers, systems, personnel, or the public. If Site Star is involved in a merger, acquisition, sale of assets, or similar transaction, information may be transferred as part of that transaction. ## Cookies, analytics, and advertising We may use cookies, pixels, and similar technologies for website functionality, security, analytics, and advertising measurement. These technologies may help us understand how people use our website, how they arrived at it, and whether our advertisements are effective. You can control cookies through your browser settings, although disabling them may affect how parts of the website function. ## Data retention We keep information for as long as reasonably necessary to provide our services, maintain business records, meet legal obligations, resolve disputes, and protect our systems. When a customer stops using the service, we may return, export, delete, or retain information as described in the applicable service agreement and our ordinary data-retention practices. ## Security We use reasonable measures to protect the information we handle. However, no system or method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. If a security incident affects your information, we will provide notice when required by law. ## Your privacy rights Depending on where you live, you may have rights to request access to, correction of, or deletion of certain personal information, or to opt out of the sharing of your information for advertising. To make a privacy request, email [hello@sitestar.io](mailto:hello@sitestar.io). We may need to verify your identity before responding. ## Children’s privacy Our website and services are meant for businesses and are not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. ## Changes to this policy We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the “Last updated” date above. If the changes are significant, we may provide additional notice. ## Contact us Questions about this Privacy Policy or your information may be sent to: BP Zero LLC d/b/a Site Star 5900 Balcones Drive, Suite 100 Austin, Texas 78731 [hello@sitestar.io](mailto:hello@sitestar.io) --- # More Than Website Maintenance: a Smart Website | Site Star > Most maintenance services patch your site. Canonical: https://sitestar.io/terms # Terms of Service **Last updated: July 10, 2026** These Terms of Service (“Terms”) are an agreement between Site Star (“Site Star,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) and the business using our service (“you” or “your”). By signing up for or using the service, you agree to these Terms and confirm that you have authority to agree on behalf of your business. If you do not agree, do not use the service. Questions may be sent to [hello@sitestar.io](mailto:hello@sitestar.io). ## The service Site Star is a managed website service. We may rebuild or migrate your existing website, move it to managed hosting, and operate it for you on an ongoing basis. You may submit website change requests by email or through another communication method we make available. Depending on your plan, the service may also include hosting, backups, monitoring, routine security maintenance, performance checks, search-visibility checks, reporting, and support. The exact services, limits, and pricing included in your plan are described on the applicable checkout page, proposal, order form, or plan description. The service is provided on a best-effort basis. We do not guarantee any specific business, marketing, traffic, search-ranking, performance, or revenue result. ## Free previews We may provide a free preview of a rebuilt or updated website before you become a paying customer. A preview is provided for evaluation only, may be temporary, may be changed or removed at any time, and will not become a paid subscription without your clear agreement. We are not required to preserve, transfer, or publish a preview unless you become a paying customer or we agree otherwise in writing. ## Access and authorization To provide the service, you authorize us to access, host, modify, configure, and manage your website and related accounts, which may include your domain, hosting account, website platform, analytics, search tools, plugins, and other services needed to operate the website. You are responsible for providing accurate access information and making sure you have the right to give us that access. We may rely on requests submitted by you or by anyone you identify as an authorized contact. We may require additional verification before making sensitive changes involving domains, account ownership, credentials, or other important settings. ## Change requests and scope Your plan includes a reasonable volume of routine website updates. These may include changes to text, contact information, business hours, staff, services, pricing, pages, images, announcements, events, and other ordinary website content. Requests are handled based on complexity, available capacity, and the information or approvals you provide. Turnaround times are estimates and are not guaranteed. Large projects, full redesigns, additional websites, custom programming, complex integrations, e-commerce, extensive copywriting, unusually high request volume, emergency work, and other work outside your plan may require a separate agreement or additional fee. We may decline or pause any request that is outside the scope of your plan, unlawful, infringing, unsafe, technically unreasonable, or likely to harm the security, stability, or reputation of your website or our service. ## Your responsibilities You agree to provide accurate information, timely access, content, instructions, and approvals. You are responsible for the legality and accuracy of your business, products, services, advertising claims, and website content. You must own or have permission to use all content, images, logos, and other materials you provide to us. You may not use the service for unlawful, fraudulent, deceptive, infringing, defamatory, malicious, or harmful activity. Site Star does not provide legal, tax, accounting, regulatory-compliance, privacy-compliance, or accessibility-certification services unless expressly agreed in writing. ## Fees, billing, and cancellation The service is billed monthly at the price shown for your plan unless otherwise agreed in writing. Fees are billed in advance, and your subscription renews automatically each billing period until canceled. You authorize us and our payment processor to charge your payment method for recurring fees, applicable taxes, and any additional work you approve. You may cancel at any time by emailing [hello@sitestar.io](mailto:hello@sitestar.io) or through another cancellation method we make available. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current paid billing period and stops future recurring charges. Except where required by law, fees already paid are non-refundable, including for partial billing periods. If a payment fails or your account becomes past due, we may pause work, suspend the service, take the managed website offline, or end the service until the balance is paid. We may change plan prices by giving you advance notice. Any change will apply no earlier than your next billing period. ## Ownership You keep ownership of the content, images, logos, trademarks, domain name, and other materials you provide. After all amounts due are paid, you own the final website content and custom work created specifically for your business. We retain ownership of our software, tools, templates, reusable code, systems, processes, automation, methods, and other materials used to provide the service. Your website may also use third-party themes, plugins, fonts, images, software, or services. Those materials remain subject to their own licenses and may not transfer when your service ends. You may need to purchase replacement licenses to continue using them. ## Third-party services The service relies on third-party providers, including hosting companies, payment processors, domain registrars, analytics services, plugins, and search platforms. We are not responsible for outages, policy changes, discontinued features, security incidents, or failures of third-party services that are outside our reasonable control. ## Security, backups, and availability We use reasonable efforts to provide the monitoring, backups, security maintenance, and availability included in your plan. However, no website or system is completely secure or error-free. We do not guarantee uninterrupted service, a specific uptime level, successful restoration from every backup, or protection from every vulnerability, attack, outage, or data loss. ## Privacy and confidentiality Our handling of personal information is described in our [Privacy Policy](https://sitestar.io/privacy). Each party agrees to use reasonable care to protect nonpublic business, technical, financial, and security information received from the other party and to use it only as needed for the service. ## SMS/Text Messaging Terms During onboarding, we ask for your mobile phone number and whether you would like to receive text updates about your website. If you agree, you consent to receive text messages from us related to your website and the changes you request, including confirmations, questions about your requests, updates when changes are live, and occasional recommendations for your site. Message frequency varies and depends on how often you contact us about your site. Message and data rates may apply depending on your mobile carrier and plan. Site Star does not charge for text messages. You may reply STOP at any time to opt out. After you reply STOP, we will send one confirmation message and then stop texting you. You may still receive necessary account or service communications by email. Reply HELP for assistance, or contact us at [hello@sitestar.io](mailto:hello@sitestar.io). We do not sell or share your mobile phone number or text-messaging opt-in information with third parties. Our handling of your information is described in our [Privacy Policy](https://sitestar.io/privacy). ## Intellectual-property complaints If you believe content hosted through our service infringes your intellectual-property rights, contact us at [hello@sitestar.io](mailto:hello@sitestar.io) and identify the protected work, the disputed material, its location, and the basis for your claim. We may remove or disable access to disputed material while reviewing a complaint and may suspend or terminate customers who repeatedly infringe the rights of others. ## No guarantees and disclaimer of warranties We may work to improve your website’s performance, speed, reliability, security, usability, and search visibility, but we do not guarantee any specific result. The service is provided “as is” and “as available.” To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all express and implied warranties, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, and non-infringement. ## Limitation of liability To the fullest extent permitted by law, Site Star and its owners, employees, contractors, and affiliates will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, revenue, business opportunities, data, or goodwill. Our total aggregate liability arising out of or relating to the service or these Terms will not exceed the total amount you paid us during the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim. Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot legally be limited. ## Indemnification You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Site Star and its owners, employees, contractors, and affiliates from third-party claims, damages, liabilities, and reasonable attorneys’ fees arising from your content, your instructions, your business activities, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of any law or third-party right. ## Ending the service You may cancel as described above. We may suspend or end the service for nonpayment, unlawful use, misuse, security risks, or a material violation of these Terms. We may also discontinue the service for business or operational reasons by giving reasonable notice. If we end the service for convenience before the end of a prepaid billing period, we will provide a prorated refund for the unused portion of that period. ## Website handoff After the service ends, you may request a standard export or handoff of your transferable website content and files, provided your account is paid in full. The export will not include our internal systems, proprietary tools, automation, reusable technology, nontransferable licenses, or third-party services that require an active subscription. You must request the export within 30 days after the service ends. After that period, we may stop hosting the website and delete stored data consistent with our Privacy Policy and ordinary data-retention practices. Migration assistance beyond a standard export may require an additional fee. ## Changes to these Terms We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we will update the “Last updated” date and provide reasonable notice of material changes. Your continued use of the service after the updated Terms take effect means you accept them. ## General These Terms, our Privacy Policy, your plan details, and any signed proposal, order form, or separate written agreement form the entire agreement between the parties concerning the service. If there is a conflict, a signed written agreement or order form controls over these Terms, and these Terms control over general website materials. You may not transfer these Terms without our written consent. We may transfer them in connection with a sale, merger, reorganization, or transfer of our business. Neither party is responsible for delays or failures caused by events beyond its reasonable control. If any provision is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions will remain in effect. A failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver of the right to enforce it later. The parties are independent contractors. These Terms do not create a partnership, agency, employment, or joint-venture relationship. Provisions that by their nature should continue after the service ends will survive termination. ## Governing law These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles. Any dispute arising out of or relating to the service or these Terms must be brought in the state or federal courts located in Travis County, Texas, and each party agrees to that jurisdiction and venue. ## Contact BP Zero LLC d/b/a Site Star 5900 Balcones Drive, Suite 100 Austin, Texas 78731 [hello@sitestar.io](mailto:hello@sitestar.io) --- # Get Text Updates About Your Website | Site Star > Opt in to receive text updates from Site Star about your website — change confirmations, status updates, quick questions, and service notifications.
